About this product
Reading, and nothing else. There is no pen, no note-taking mode and no app store — the Slate 8 opens EPUB, PDF and plain text, and the omissions are why it starts in under two seconds and lasts six weeks.
Two physical page keys on the left bezel, mirrored in software for left-handed use. Vellum found that the single most common reason people put a reader down is holding it at an angle their thumb cannot reach, so the bezel is asymmetric by 9mm.
Highlights
- Physical page keys, mirrorable for either hand
- Asymmetric 9mm bezel sized for a thumb
- EPUB, PDF, TXT and CBZ — no store, no account required
- Six weeks standby, 24 hours of continuous reading
- IPX8, and the port is sealed rather than flapped

Good, with one reservation
Does everything described. Whether it is worth the difference over the mid-range option depends on how much the specific feature matters to you — for me it was marginal.

Second one I have bought
Ordered on a Tuesday and it was here Thursday. Setup was straightforward and the documentation actually covered the thing I got stuck on.

Solid, not exceptional
The build quality is genuinely good and I have no complaints there. It is a little heavier than I wanted, which the listing does state — I just did not weigh the alternative before ordering.

Would buy again
I bought this after reading the specification twice and it is accurate. The finish is even, nothing rattles, and the weight is what was stated rather than what was hoped for.

Does what it says, nothing more
Solid, unremarkable, and I mean that as a compliment. Nothing here surprised me either way.

Would buy again
The reason I chose this over the cheaper option was the published measurement, and having compared the two side by side, the difference is real and worth the gap.

Fine, but read the specification
Solid, unremarkable, and I mean that as a compliment. Nothing here surprised me either way.

Better than I expected
